The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about a fun activity at the Lions Park!

During the summer of 2019 The Boldt Company and United Way partnered together to donate one of their Born Learning Trails to our Greenville Lions Park.

Born Learning Trails provide the opportunity for parents and caregivers to engage children in literacy and language skills through interactive stations. The Born Learning Trail at Lions Park is located along the trail in front of the playground.

From start to finish, you’ll find 12 signs and corresponding paint on the ground below. First you’ll find a construction worker sign along with the United Way welcome sign. There are nine activity stations that follow. These stations promote movement, activity, learning and observation all disguised as fun little activities. At the end, you’ll find a Boldt Company dump truck (a perfect photo op!).

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about Elder Brook Park!

Elder Brook Park is located at the corner of Municipal Drive and Glen Valley Drive. The 8.5 acre park land features a walking trail, open play space, retention pond, and on street parking. The name was changed earlier this year to reflect the school that once sat on that property. Parts of the school house foundation can still be seen in the wooded southeast corner of the park.

According to a report done by John Richards at UW-Milwaukee:
“The Elder Brook School site harbors the remains of the School District No. 3 Schoolhouse and is located in Greenville Township, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. The land on which the school was constructed was deeded as a school house property in 1854 but the earliest available plat maps of the township dates to 1873. This map depicts a school on the property. However, it is likely that the original construction occurred in 1854 or soon thereafter as free public education was mandated by Wisconsin’s state constitution six years earlier in 1848. By 1937 state-wide compliance with Wisconsin’s law resulted in the creation of 7,777 school districts with 6,181 one-room schools (Apps 1996:177). State mandated consolidation efforts reduced that number to 2,289 one-room schools in 1959 but as late 1964, 595 one-room schools remained in operation; 20 of these were located in Outagamie County (Rothwell 1963). Today, Wisconsin has 424 public school districts with 2,215 schools, none of which are operating one-room school houses. A standing structure on the Elder Brook school site is last visible on a 1943 aerial photo but is no longer present on a 1957 aerial photo of the site.”

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about James Wunderlich Park!

Formally known as Pebble Ridge Park, James Wunderlich Park is located off of the intersection of Design Drive and Craftsmen Drive. The park was renamed in October of 2021 after James Wunderlich, who served on the Greenville Town Board from 1967 – 1997 and as Town Chair from 1971 – 1997.

James Wunderlich Park may seem like just another small neighborhood park but with 13 acres, it has a lot to offer! The playground was designed for kids of all ages and has equipment to climb, slide, hang and swing. Next to the playground there is a picnic area and plenty of large open play space. A beautiful prairie overlooks the retention pond and on street parking allows for easy access to all areas of the park.

Walking trails run throughout the park and provide many different views. You can walk through a wooded area, part of the prairie and along the retention pond. In August of 2019, approximately 1,600 feet of 8 foot wide trail was paved to provide a cleaner, safer surface for users. Prior to paving, the trail was all gravel and frequently washed out, creating low spots. The paved segment branches off to align with both entrances of the woods on either side of the prairie. The wooded section of the trail remains gravel. The whole trail is approximately one half mile.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about one of our Landscape Beautification Winners!

We would like to congratulate Sue Datta on receiving the Landscape Beautification Award! Sue was nominated by her husband, Paul, who says “Over 30 years, Sue has taken a farm field and turned it into a forest wonderland. From peach, apricot and mulberry to Ohio buckeye and Kentucky coffee tree, she has planted hundreds of varieties of flowers, plants, shrubs and trees. Also including a woodland garden with native woodland plants.”

Sue gave members from our Forestry Department as well as the Urban Forestry Board a tour of her property when the award was presented. We were not only impressed with her beautiful yard but also her knowledge about each of the trees and plants in her yard and the intentional way she planted them. Sue remembers where each of her trees are planted as well as when she planted them. Many of her trees were started from seeds that she collected from other trees.

Through the Landscape Beautification Award, our department, along with the Urban Forestry Board, recognizes the efforts of residents, businesses and organizations within the Village of Greenville that beautify the community through outstanding landscape improvements and maintenance.

Do you have a neighbor with a beautiful yard?
Do you frequent a local business that has gone above and beyond?
Have you driven by a property that catches your eye?
