Greenwood Road Mailbox Update

A reminder for residents on Greenwood Road. The contractor in charge of the reconstruction project will be removing the temporary mailboxes installed for this project on the November 15, 2021.

The Village of Greenville will not be installing mailboxes along Greenwood Road. It is the responsibility of the resident, or the property owner, to install their own permanent mailbox.

Mailboxes should be installed on the same side of the street as previously located.
You are able to install your mailbox at any time however, please keep in mind that if the restoration is not complete in front of your home, there is a possibility that the mailbox may be damaged by the contractor doing this work. It is the Villages recommendation that you install your mailbox after the restoration has been completed in front of your property. This would be when the straw mulch has been placed on the ground in front of your home.

Mailbox and installation guidelines are set by the US Postal Services. USPS gives the following helpful guidelines for correctly placing your mailbox:

  • Position your mailbox 41″ to 45″ from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry.
  • Place your mailbox 6″ to 8″ back from the curb. If you do not have a raised curb, contact your local postmaster for guidance.
  • Put your house or apartment number on the mailbox.
  • If your mailbox is on a different street from your house or apartment, put your full street address on the box.

The best mailbox supports are stable but bend or fall away if a car hits them. The Federal Highway Administration recommends:
  •  A 4″ x 4″ wooden support or a 2″-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe.
  • Avoid unyielding and potentially dangerous supports, like heavy metal pipes, concrete posts, and farm equipment (e.g., milk cans filled with concrete).
  • Bury your post no more than 24″ deep.

Please contact the local post office if you have further questions about mailboxes or installation. More information can also be found on their website at https://www.usps.com/manage/mailboxes.htm.
