The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week is also Arbor Day and that’s cause for celebration!

What is Arbor Day? The answer is quite simple, Arbor Day is one day of the year when we all celebrate trees and the important role that they play in our environment. It was started in Nebraska in 1872 and is still celebrated today throughout the United States and even around the world. Arbor Day is an important way to raise awareness of the many issues that surround trees.

Normally we would host a class and plant a tree together as a community, this year we’re celebrating a little differently. You can stop in our office to wish us a happy Arbor Day and receive a free seedling or you can celebrate by planting a tree right from your couch! All you have to do post a photo of your favorite tree on social media, tag @arborday, and use the hashtag #ArborDay. Then, Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree on your behalf! To follow along with how many trees have been planted or to learn more, visit www.celebratearborday.com

We’ll go first! Our pick is the American Beech. It is not a common tree in Wisconsin, confined almost exclusively to the eastern part of the state, but you can find this beautiful tree right here in Greenville! It is easily recognized by its smooth, gray bark. The leaves turn a golden bronze in fall and the tree produces hard, brown beechnuts that are an important food source for birds and mammals. Take a walk through Schueler Woods at Lions Park and see if you can find the American Beech growing there.

Arbor Week

In honor of Arbor Day on Friday, we're celebrating Arbor Week here in Greenville!

This year marks 20 years for the Village of Greenville named as an Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA community!

What does it mean to achieved Tree City USA status? It means that we have met the four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Find ways you can help celebrate:

National Work Zone Awareness Week

The 2021 National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 26-30.

Work zones play a critical role in the preservation and enhancement of our nation’s roadways. They separate construction and maintenance activities from traffic, providing a safe route for all road users (motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists) and a safe area for workers. However, work zone related changes in traffic patterns and rights of way, combined with the presence of workers, and the frequent movement of work vehicles, may lead to crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, there was a work zone crash every 3.5 hours in Wisconsin last year. It’s important for everyone to do their part to be safe. Your good choices behind the wheel are good for everyone on the road. Every driver makes a difference.

Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.
