The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about our other ice rink!

The ice rink at Jennerjohn Park is located on the north end of the park, next to the sledding hill, and is open for use during regular park hours. New lights were installed in 2019 to light the rink from dusk until 10pm when the park closes. It measures approximately 167 feet long, and 113 feet wide.

Construction of this ice rink relies heavily on Mother Nature’s cooperation and typically takes a little longer to build and open than our other rink. It is built directly on the ground, without a liner, so there needs to be a significant amount of frost in the ground before we can even begin. With no shelter from the sun, the temperatures need to remain below freezing for an extended period of time in order for us to build enough ice.

Contraction requires several thin layers of water to be poured into a depression in the grass and time between each layer to allow the previous to completely freeze. This process can take several weeks, or sometimes even longer if the weather is not in our favor, to complete. Then, throughout the frozen months, our staff continues to resurface the rink the same way a Zamboni would.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about one of our ice rinks!

The ice rink at Community Park is located at the east end of the covered pavilion. It’s open during regular park hours with lighting from dusk until 10pm when the park closes. It has picnic tables at either entrance and hockey nets at both ends of the ice. The whole rink measures 60 by 80 feet!

To build it, we start by placing boards around the outer edges and laying down a plastic liner. Then we flood it with water. If the weather stays below freezing, it will typically take between 7 and 14 days to become frozen enough to skate on. To freeze completely, it could take more than a month! Throughout the winter months, our staff will resurface the rinks in the same way that a Zamboni would.

This cold weather is great for maintaining the ice and keeping it frozen, but it’s important to always abide by the rules and watch for signage. If the rink is used in poor conditions, it can jeopardize the status and cause temporary or even permanent closing for the season.

Christmas Tree Pickup

Christmas tree collection will begin on Monday, January 10, 2022 along side our regularly scheduled Brush Pickup. This collection will be a village wide service that you do not need to sign up for. During this collection, Public Works staff will start at one end of the village and work their way through to the other. Staff will make it down every village road, but will not turn around, or go back, for missed trees. If you miss this collection, you will need to be added to the next month's brush pick up list or bring your tree to the Yard Waste Site.

Collection will begin on Monday, January 10th and will continue throughout the week, and possibly into the next, until complete. In the event of snow or ice, the start of collection will be pushed back until plowing operations have been completed.

Please remember that if your tree is covered in snow, or frozen to the ground, it will not be picked up. For our full Brush Pickup Policy, please visit our website: https://bit.ly/3qHLDTh
