The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about the Pebble Ridge Park.

Pebble Ridge Park may seem like just another small neighborhood park but with 13 acres, it has a lot to offer! The playground was designed for kids of all ages and has equipment to climb, slide, hang and swing. Next to the playground there is a picnic area and plenty of large open play space. A beautiful prairie overlooks the retention pond and on street parking allows for easy access to all areas of the park.

Walking trails run throughout the park and provide many different views. You can walk through a wooded area, part of the prairie and along the retention pond. In August of 2019, approximately 1,600 feet of 8 foot wide trail was paved to provide a cleaner, safer surface for users. Prior to paving, the trail was all gravel and frequently washed out, creating low spots. The paved segment branches off to align with both entrances of the woods on either side of the prairie. The wooded section of the trail remains gravel. The whole trail is approximately one half mile.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about The Kimberly Court trail paving project.

This trail project was designed to provide safer travel between the section of trail on Kimberly Court and the Greenville Middle School. The trail now provides off-street pedestrian accommodations and connects to the existing trail system on Fawn Ridge Drive. Prior to this paving project, the Kimberly Court Trail ended where the cul-de-sac began.

The project included removing the existing driveway and culverts, installing storm sewer, filling the existing ditches, and then grading and paving a new 10 foot asphalt trail. This trail system connects Jennerjohn Park to Lions Park and passes by both the middle school and the YMCA along the way.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks so this week we want to tell you about Greenville’s very own September 11th Memorial located in Memorial Square.

Memorial Square is a small park area located in front of the old fire station. The site is dedicated to honoring all veterans and Fire/EMS volunteers. Along with the Memorial Brick Walkway, you will find a September 11th Memorial. This memorial site features two structural beams recovered from the World Trade Center wreckage in New York.

In 2010, the Port Authority of NY/NJ World Trade Center Artifacts Program began soliciting proposals from fire departments, police departments, communities, government facilities, museums, etc. for World Trade Center steel to be used in public displays. A total of 1,027 steel artifacts from the WTC wreckage were designated for this program. Greenville is one of approximately 23 sites in the state of Wisconsin to be granted the responsibility of displaying World Trade Center artifacts.

On Saturday August 27, 2011, the Town of Greenville received 2 structural beams recovered from the World Trade Center wreckage. These beams were part of the exoskeleton of the towers. Each beam weighs approximately 2,700 pounds and measure 13 feet in length.

Ground was broken for the start of construction on July 11, 2012 and continued for a little over a month. More than 160 people and businesses donated materials, labor, money, and services to the construction. Many others helped to plan, and participated in, the memorial dedication and unveiling. The Greenville September 11th Memorial was officially dedicated on August 25th, 2012.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you a little more about one of our most well-known parks – the Greenville Lions Park.

Lions Park is a 57 acre park located at the southern edge of the developed portion of Greenville. It’s commonly known for its large scale community gatherings but this mostly developed, community sized park has a lot to offer the general public too!

The park’s existing facilities include off street parking, a large indoor barn pavilion and thee open shelter spaces. Two out of the three shelters include bathrooms and kitchen. These shelters, along with the barn, can be rented in the warmer months. The current recreational amenities include a playground, vast open play space, nature/walking trails, free little library, Born Learning Trail activities, an amphitheater, and recreational trail system access.

In the beginning of 2018, the Greenville Lions Club began the final portion development. This work is still ongoing but, when complete, will include a pavilion and play space, pickleball courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and a tennis court. The existing skate park will also be moved here from Community Park. There will also be additional parking made available in front of this newly developed portion. This project is being funded and managed entirely by the Greenville Lions Club.
