The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you a little more about Elder Brook Park!

Formally known as Glen Valley Park, Elder Brook Park is located at the corner of Municipal Drive and Glen Valley Drive. The 8.5 acre park land features a walking trail, open play space, retention pond, and on street parking. The name was changed earlier this year to reflect the school that once sat on that property. Parts of the school house foundation can still be seen in the wooded southeast corner of the park.

According to a report done by John Richards at UW-Milwaukee:
“The Elder Brook School site harbors the remains of the School District No. 3 Schoolhouse and is located in Greenville Township, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. The land on which the school was constructed was deeded as a school house property in 1854 but the earliest available plat maps of the township dates to 1873. This map depicts a school on the property. However, it is likely that the original construction occurred in 1854 or soon thereafter as free public education was mandated by Wisconsin’s state constitution six years earlier in 1848. By 1937 state-wide compliance with Wisconsin’s law resulted in the creation of 7,777 school districts with 6,181 one-room schools (Apps 1996:177). State mandated consolidation efforts reduced that number to 2,289 one-room schools in 1959 but as late 1964, 595 one-room schools remained in operation; 20 of these were located in Outagamie County (Rothwell 1963). Today, Wisconsin has 424 public school districts with 2,215 schools, none of which are operating one-room school houses. A standing structure on the Elder Brook school site is last visible on a 1943 aerial photo but is no longer present on a 1957 aerial photo of the site.”

How cool is it that we have this little piece of history located right here in Greenville!?

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about another spot at Lions Park that we love!

Schueler Woods is located at Lions Park and is named after the family who previously owned the land. A gravel based trail winds through the woods and connects to the rest of the trail system within the park. The overall trail length within Lions Park is approximately 1 mile and the Schueler Woods section makes up about 0.3 miles of it. There are several benches located along the trail as well as a beautiful stone learning circle is located just inside the south entrance of the woods. A portion of the trail was even designed to accommodate the visually impaired so that everyone can enjoy the area!

During the summer and spring months, many enjoy listening to the birds and observing the critters while walking through the woods and in the winter, it’s a great place for some snowshoeing or brisk winter walk. But our favorite time of the year to visit Schueler Woods is in the fall when the leaves are changing colors and falling from the trees!

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to give you an update on the new construction at Lions Park!

The Greenville Lions Club started the development of the final portion of Lions Park in the beginning of 2018. The first phase of construction was completed in June of 2018 and included the mass grading of the site, the installation of utilities and the installation of a gravel base for the parking lot and sport courts.

In August of 2019 the Lions Club began phase two by pouring concrete for the courts, stairways and ramps. Topsoil was placed and grass seed planted that following fall. Fencing around the courts was added during the summer of 2020.

Major progress was made this summer with the installation of railing to the stairways and ramps, painting of lines and installation of nets. Changes to the overall design were also approved and implemented. The original tennis courts have been redesigned to accommodate eight dedicated pickleball courts, a dedicated tennis court now replaces one of basketball courts and the remaining basketball court includes hoops for both full court and two half courts. All of the courts are now fully equipped and operational.

Final construction to this area of the park will include a playground, paved parking, skate park and a pavilion.

This exciting project is being funded and managed by the Greenville Lions Club and is a great addition to the park!

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about the Heritage Fountain at Jennerjohn Park!

At almost 11 feet tall, the Heritage Fountain has been a focal point at Jennerjohn Park since it was installed in 2004. It is made of solid granite and usually features a soaring eagle at the top. The brick plaza surrounding the fountain includes memorial bricks and benches, stone walls, and beautiful landscaping. Though there is no swimming, standing, or throwing money into the fountain, it is still the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature!

The water within the fountain is usually kept a bright blue using special fountain dye however, you may notice something a little different about it during the month of October.. IT’S PURPLE! Our Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department likes to have a little fun to finish out the season and has been dying the fountain a different color since 2016.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about our skate park!

The skate park is located at the northwest end of Community Park and is open from 7am until dusk. It was designed in 2013 by local skaters and later built in 2014. When the skate park was built, it was built with the intention that Community Park would be a temporary home and it would eventually move to the Lions Park. Although there is no date currently set for this move, it is still the future plan.

Equipment at the skate park includes a quarter pipe, bank ramp, kinked grind rail, two grind boxes and central ramp with additional grind rail. This facility is not supervised but, we do encourage all skaters to use protective wear while skating at the park.
