The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. In honor of Memorial Day, our Feature Friday this week will be the Memorial Square.

Memorial Square is a small park area located next to our office at the Municipal Service Complex. The site is dedicated to honoring all veterans and Fire/EMS volunteers. Along with beautiful landscaping and ornamental statues, you will find a memorial walkway honoring those who have served, or are currently serving, our country or community. The walkway is filled with personalized bricks that lead to a flower garden featuring a veteran’s memorial. The memorial is surrounded by flowers and backed by the American Flag, State Flag, and POW Flag. Further down the walkway, you will find the September 11 Memorial. This memorial site features two structural beams recovered from the World Trade Center wreckage in New York. The Greenville September 11th Memorial was dedicated on August 25th, 2012.

To all past and present US service men and women, we thank you for your service.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about the blooming Appletree Square!

Appletree Square is a 2 acre park located on Appletree Court. It was cleverly named after the road on which it is located, but later, was also planted with a Crabapple Arboretum. There are 9 varieties of crabapple trees within this property and, if you follow the recreational trail through the tunnel to Jennerjohn Park, you will find several more! Each tree has a name plate at its base showing what type of crabapple it is.

Although there isn’t a playground at this park, you’ll still find plenty to enjoy! There is an abundance of green space, recreational trail access, park bench, and a Free Little Library that was built and installed by local Girl Scouts.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we are excited to announce that the Heritage Fountain at Jennerjohn Park has been turned back on for the summer!

Standing at almost 11 feet tall, the Heritage Fountain has been a focal point at Jennerjohn Park since it was installed in 2004. It’s made of solid granite and features a soaring eagle at the top. The brick plaza surrounding the fountain includes benches, stone walls, memorial bricks and beautiful landscaping. The water within the Heritage Fountain is dyed a bright blue to help make it viewable form both near and far. Though there is no swimming, standing, or throwing money into the fountain, it is still the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature!
