The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about our trail system!

The Greenville Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department currently maintains approximately 8 miles of paved multi-use recreational trails. The largest sections of paved trail can be found along Highway 76, Parkview Drive and Lily of the Valley Drive, while smaller sections can be found within several subdivisions. Most of this trail system is three season use but some portions are even maintained during the winter months for year round use. The department also maintains several gravel, grass and nature trails throughout our parks. You can find these type of trails at the Lions Park, Pebble Ridge Park, and around several of the stormwater ponds throughout Town.

While walking along the Greenville Trail System, you’ll find several amenities including waste containers, memorial trees and benches, Little Free Libraries, bike racks and Dogi-Pot waste containers with both the bags to pick up after your dog, and a waste container to throw it away. Several of our trails lead you to, or even though, our parks allowing access to many more. Public park amenities include restrooms, grilling stations, open play space, recreational courts, and playgrounds

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about a fun activity at the Lions Park!

During the summer of 2019 The Boldt Company and United Way partnered together to donate one of their Born Learning Trails to our Greenville Lions Park.

Born Learning Trails provide the opportunity for parents and caregivers to engage children in literacy and language skills through interactive stations. The Born Learning Trail at Lions Park is located along the trail in front of the playground.

From start to finish, you’ll find 12 signs and corresponding paint on the ground below. First you’ll find a construction worker sign along with the United Way welcome sign. There are nine activity stations that follow. These stations promote movement, activity, learning and observation all disguised as fun little activities. At the end, you’ll find a Boldt Company dump truck (another perfect photo op!).

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about one of our neighborhood parks.

Glen Valley Park is a neighborhood park located on the far west end of the Glen Valley subdivision with access off of Englewood Drive. It’s the Town of Greenville’s newest park property and is approximately 2.5 acres.

In October of 2017 the playground was installed with help from neighbors and community volunteers. The playground was designed for kids of all ages and has equipment to climb, slide, hang and swing. The playground area is surrounded by woodchips while the rest of the park is seeded with turf grass and planted with trees. With future development, we plan to add additional acreage to the park as well as other park amenities.

Have you visited the Glen Valley Park yet?

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. As we begin a new month, we want to tell you why the month of July is so important to us.. its Parks and Recreation Month!

Since 1985, people in the United States have celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation, and to recognize the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals — along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers — that maintain our country’s local, state and community parks.

The services that park and recreation professionals provide are vital for our communities — from protecting open space and natural resources to helping fight obesity and providing activities and resources for all people. This has been especially true throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Park and Recreation Month encourages everyone to reflect on the exponential value park and recreation professionals bring to communities.

July is the perfect time to see what our parks and recreation have to offer. Tell us your favorite part of parks and recreation?
