The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you more about the trail system here in Greenville.

The Greenville Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department currently maintains approximately 8 miles of paved multi-use recreational trails. The largest sections of paved trail can be found along Highway 76, Parkview Drive and Lily of the Valley Drive, while smaller sections can be found within several subdivisions. Most of this trail system is three season use but some portions are even maintained during the winter months for year round use. The department also maintains several gravel, grass and nature trails throughout our parks. You can find these type of trails at the Lions Park, Pebble Ridge Park, and around several of the stormwater ponds throughout Town.

Our many trails provide recreational opportunities that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Explore the interactive maps below to find a trail that suits your needs!

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to give you a project update!

Did you notice some work taking place this fall along Hwy 96 by the Sports Complex? That was Phase 1 of the construction of Schultz Farm Road. Phase 1 included the construction of a bypass lane on the south side of Hwy 96 and the construction of the road base outside of the right of way on the north side of Hwy 96. Phase 2 will be completed in spring after the relocation of conflicting utilities and will consist of construction of the right turn lane on the north side of Hwy 96, paving of Schultz Farm Road and connection to Hwy 96. Schultz Farm Road is an officially mapped Town road that will not only serve as a new, safer access to the Sports Complex, but will also serve the new Well #5 and a private residence. This roadway also provides future access to any potential other development in the area.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you a little more about Jennerjohn Park.

Jennerjohn Park is a 25 acre park located in the heart of Greenville. As one of Greenville’s most popular parks, it has a lot to offer! It’s existing facilities include a pavilion, grills, picnic tables, casual play baseball field, tennis courts, off street parking, playground, Heritage Fountain, natural trails, and access to the recreational trail system. In the winter, there’s a sledding hill, ice skating rink and cross country ski trails.

At almost 11 feet tall, the Heritage Fountain has been a focal point at Jennerjohn Park since it was installed in 2004. It is made of solid granite and features a soaring eagle at the top. The brick plaza surrounding the fountain includes memorial bricks and benches, stone walls, and beautiful landscaping. Though there is no swimming, standing, or throwing money into the fountain, it is still the perfect place to relax and enjoy some nature!

Just south of the Heritage Fountain, you’ll find the playground. The playground at Jennerjohn Park is the biggest, and probably most popular, playground in Greenville. There are three different playground areas to choose from. The play areas total approximately 9,800 square feet and include equipment to slide, climb, ride, and swing. You will also find diggers and a metal fire truck for “driving” and climbing in the sand area.

To the north of the tennis courts is a beautiful prairie that surrounds a stormwater pond. A grass walking trail runs through the prairie and around the pond with a wood chipped segment through a wooded area. The prairie was planted 5 years ago and is well established, bringing many benefits to the area.

From recreation to leisure, Jennerjohn park has something to offer everyone! What’s your favorite thing to do there?

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about one of our most well-known parks – the Greenville Lions Park.

Lions Park is a 57 acre park located at the southern edge of the developed portion of Greenville. It’s commonly known for its large scale community gatherings but this mostly developed, community sized park has a lot to offer the general public too!

The park’s existing facilities include off street parking, a large indoor barn pavilion and three open shelter spaces. Two out of the three shelters include restrooms and a kitchen. These shelters, along with the barn, can be rented in the warmer months. The current recreational amenities include a playground, archery range, vast open play space, nature/walking trails, free little library, Born Learning Trail activities, an amphitheater, and recreational trail system access.

At the beginning of 2018, the Greenville Lions Club began development of the final portion of the park. This work is ongoing but, when complete, will include a pavilion and play space, basketball courts, volleyball courts and tennis courts. The existing skate park at Community Park will also be relocated to this area of Lions Park. There will also be additional parking made available in front of this newly developed portion. This project is being funded and managed entirely by the Greenville Lions Club.

Stormwater

  • Ditching Maintenance
    • Everglade Road: south side of the roadway, from just east of the post office 350 linear feet to a private driveway. This maintenance will remove the sediment that currently fills the ditch causing water and sediment to enter onto the roadway surface during rain events. It will also help to prevent winter ice issues from forming on the road.
    • Lily of the Valley/Maple Terrace/Buttercup Court: approximately 1900 linear feet of ditches will be maintained. This maintenance will remove 6-12 inches of sediment and vegetation from the bottom of the ditch. This prevents adequate stormwater conveyance during storm events.

Water & Sewer

  • STH 15 Utility Relocates
    • Work began the week of September 28, 2020
    • Utility relocates along STH 15 between Julius Drive and Lily of the Valley Drive.
