The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about a pretty special name change to one of our parks.

Did you notice that the name of Pebble Ridge Park recently changed? Last Saturday, October 30, we dedicated the park as the newly renamed James Wunderlich Park.

The park is named after James Wunderlich, who served on the Greenville Town Board from 1967 – 1997 and as Town Chair from 1971 – 1997. During his 30 years on the Board, James was instrumental in many important moments in the growth of Greenville including the airport moving to Greenville, the formation of Greenville’s own fire department, construction of the old Town Hall/Fire Station and construction of the current Town Hall. Greenville also formed the Sanitary District, bringing municipal water to residents, during his time on the Board. One of Mr. Wunderlich’s proudest achievements was the development of the Greenville Business Park. The park’s location, adjacent to the business park, makes it the perfect location to rename in honor of Mr. James Wunderlich. We learned during Saturday’s dedication that James’s son Bruce also used to play in the woods of the park as a child, catching frogs and building forts; activities still enjoyed by children today.

More than 50 people, including friends and family from across the country, Village staff, members of the Village Board, and members of Park Commission, all gathered as we remembered the contributions of James Wunderlich to the Greenville community. While his legacy lives on in so many parts of the community, James Wunderlich Park will forever bear his name as an honor to his commitment to community.
