Building Permits Required

Since the spring construction season is now upon us, residents are reminded that building permits are required for the following projects:

  • Construction of any building (house, garage, shed, or any structure)
  • Additions to any house or structure
  • Re-roofing
  • Fences
  • Decks, Porches, or Pergolas
  • Remodeling of any sort (including finishing any basement area, windows, or doors)
  • Heating or air conditioning (new or replacement)
  • Electric work
  • Plumbing
  • Any moving or demolition of buildings
Please plan ahead.  The amount of time to issue any permit may take up to five (5) days.

Failure to obtain a building permit can result in double fees and/or citations.  We’d also like to make you aware that there have been issues arising at the time of home sales that have been caused by building permits not being pulled for work that has been done on the home.  This has resulted in some sellers losing their buyers.

Please feel free to contact the Building Inspector with any questions you may have at 757-5151, ext. 2200.  Our office ours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.   We recommend making an appointment with the Building Inspector to ensure their availability.  More information can be found on our website at:  http://townofgreenville.com/departments/community_development/building_inspection/index.php
