The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, the snow has us longing for summer time so, we want to tell you about our largest rental facility!

From weddings and fundraisers to concerts and crafts, The Walter J. Schroeder Barn sees an event almost every weekend during our rental season. It features tall ceilings, an open concept, and an expansive patio that can all fit up to 500 guests. It is not only our largest rental facility but also our only indoor facility.

While the facility is not temperature controlled, the 8 overhead doors help to provide a breezy indoor/outdoor space. The paved patio wraps around the sides of the building and overlooks a beautiful stormwater prairie. Indoor amenities include an ATM machine, garbage and recycling containers, large private bathrooms and the optional use of 40 wooden picnic tables. Renters also have the option of adding on the kitchen facilities which include a stove, refrigerator, freezer, large prep area, deep wash sinks, and two large serving windows.

The Barn can be rented by the day, Tuesday – Thursday or for an entire weekend, Friday – Sunday. The 2022 rental season still has available dates and is open to both residents and nonresidents. Cities and towns across Wisconsin are once again hosting the Community Fitness Challenge! The “Be Active Wisconsin” Community Challenge invites all community members to participate in a virtual challenge to promote active lifestyles, connect people to the outdoors by encouraging use of our parks/trail systems, and engage Wisconsin communities in a friendly competition! The winning community will receive a trophy, and all participants receive a T-shirt. A variety of active minutes count (not just running/walking), so let’s get moving Greenville!

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we're continuing our "Meet the Staff" series and we want to introduce you to Shawn!

Shawn started working for the Village of Greenville right after high school as a seasonal employee. He continued to work for the Parks Department while going to Fox Valley Technical College to earn his degree in Horticulture. In total, he has worked for Greenville for almost 11 years. Shawn has also worked in the Parks and Recreation field for the City of Menasha and Village of Fox Crossing. He is passionate about improving and beautifying things that are often overlooked and takes pride in being able to look around at projects he’s helped create and construct.

We asked Shawn to tell us a little more about himself and here’s what he said:
Q: What’s something you find challenging about your work?
A: Working around Mother Nature. Rain throws a wrench into a lot of projects

Q: What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
A: Building the cross country ski trail groomer

Q: What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?
A: I don’t mow grass

Q: Which historical figure would you most like to meet?
A: Enzo Ferrari

Q: If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would you choose and why?
A: Jesse James so I could work in his shop building hot rods or motorcycles

Q: What’s your favorite TV show—the one you’re always watching on repeat?
A: The Office
