The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about our trail maintenance!

The Greenville Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department currently maintains approximately 8 miles of paved multi-use recreational trails. With many of these trails being only three-season trails, you might wonder which trails can be used in the snowy months.

Our crews work hard to keep just over 4 miles of paved trail clear during the winter months. Using several different pieces of equipment including, brush and snow blower attachments on a Toolcat Bobcat and pickup trucks, it takes our staff about 4 hours to clear all of the trail systems after an average snowfall.

Trails that are maintained in the winter include trails at James Wunderlich Park, Elder Brook Park, along Parkview Drive, Lily of Valley and the entire length the CB Trail. The trail system connecting Jennerjohn Park to Community and Lions Parks is also kept clear. This section of trail also connects to the Greenville Middle School and the YMCA. Remember, this work is in addition to maintaining all of the other winter recreation activities as well as their day to day operations. In some instances, our staff also assist with roadway plowing operations. This means that that it may take the full 72 hours after a snow event is over to have the trails cleared, so please be patient. We promise to do our best to get the trails plowed as soon as possible!

Community Movie Night is a free event held at Lions Park several times throughout the summer. During this event, a movie is shown in the amphitheater and concessions are sold by the Greenville Lioness Club out of the pavilion. Attendance averages more than 200 people per movie!

A sponsorship with the Parks and Recreation Department is a great way to stretch your advertisement budget while also helping the community enhance the development and improvement of our parks and programs. It provides exposure to the entire community, recognition in the Village newsletter and on our Facebook page, your company’s name or logo on display and much, much more!

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we're continuing our "Meet the Staff" series and we want to introduce you to John!

John is one our dedicated labor employees here in the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. He grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. When he started 6 years ago, he split his time between Parks and Public Works but now, works full time with us in Parks, Recreations and Forestry!

We asked John to tell us a little more about himself and here’s what he said:
Q: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
A: Working outside and with coworkers that share the same interest in work results.

Q: What motivates you at work?
A: Watching people enjoy the parks and trails that we take care of

Q: What’s a work related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
A: Being able to work on and maintain the memorial in honor of our vets!

Q: What is your favorite season and why?
A: Fall because it’s hunting season and fall on the water is beautiful – love boat rides on the river.

Q: What’s your favorite TV show – the one you’re always watching on repeat?
A: Gun Dog TV – Hogan’s Heros
