Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week we want to tell you about one of our favorite playgrounds!

The playground at Jennerjohn Park is the biggest, and probably most popular, park playground here in Greenville. There are three different playground areas to choose from. A sand area is located furthest north and is about 1,800 square feet in size. It includes two diggers – one for standing and one for sitting – and a metal fire truck for “driving” and climbing.

The sand area and fire truck are originals to play ground but, in 2005 a community build replaced one single playground with the two that are currently there. One of the playground areas is designed for children ages 2-5 and is approximately 3000 square feet in size. It includes equipment to slide, climb, ride, and swing. The other is designed for ages 5-12 and offers much of the same play opportunities but on a higher skill level. That area is approximately 5000 square feet in size.

Other activities to enjoy while playing at the park include a ball diamond, open play space, tennis courts, the Heritage Fountain and access to the trail system. The covered pavilion offers public restroom and when not rented, shade and picnic tables as well. You’ll even find activities here in the winter months when we have our sledding hill, ice rink and ski trial!

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. With the start of our next rental season right around the corner, we want to tell you about our largest rental facility!

From weddings and fundraisers to concerts and crafts, The Walter J. Schroeder Barn sees an event almost every weekend during our rental season. It features tall ceilings, an open concept, and an expansive patio that can all fit up to 500 guests. It is not only our largest rental facility but also our only indoor facility.

While the facility is not temperature controlled, the 8 overhead doors help to provide a breezy indoor/outdoor space. The paved patio wraps around the sides of the building and overlooks a beautiful stormwater prairie. Indoor amenities include an ATM machine, garbage and recycling containers, large private bathrooms and the optional use of 40 wooden picnic tables. Renters also have the option of adding on the kitchen facilities which include a stove, refrigerator, freezer, large prep area, deep wash sinks, and two large serving windows.

The Barn can be rented by the day, Tuesday – Thursday or for an entire weekend, Friday – Sunday. The 2023 rental season opens to Greenville residents at 7am on Thursday, September 1 and are done on a first come, first serve basis. Renters should make themselves aware of the recent changes to rental forms and fees, as well as our office’s new location. Community Movie Night: August 24

We are excited to bring you our 15th annual Community Movie Night at the Lions Park! This event is fun for all ages – families, teens, grandparents, girl gangs, date night, everyone is welcome! Movies are shown outside in the amphitheater and concessions are sold by the Greenville Lioness Club. In the event of poor weather, the showing will move inside The Barn. Movies starts at dusk but movie goers are encouraged to come early because there is lots to do! For more information about this event, follow us on Facebook!

SING 2  - AUGUST 24, 2022

The petting zoo will open at 6:30pm and the showing of Sing 2 will begin around 7:45pm. The nights events are sponsored by Vivid Orthodontics.

Kona Ice will parked near the top entrance of the amphitheater beginning at 4:30pm.

Mosquito control throughout the summer and our Community Movie Night events is being provided by Mosquito Authority.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents and visitors to learn more about. This week, we want to tell you about our trails!

The Greenville Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department currently maintains approximately 8 miles of paved multi-use recreational trails. The largest sections of paved trail can be found along Highway 76, Parkview Drive and Lily of the Valley Drive, while smaller sections can be found within several subdivisions. Most of this trail system is three season use but some portions are even maintained throughout the winter months for year round use. The department also maintains several gravel, grass and nature trails within our parks. You can find these type of trails at the Lions Park, Pebble Ridge Park, and around several of the stormwater ponds throughout Town.

While walking along the Greenville Trail System, you’ll find several amenities including waste containers, memorial trees and benches, Little Free Libraries, bike racks, and Dogi-Pot waste containers with both the bags and a waste containers. Many of our trails will lead you to, or even though, our parks allowing access to those amenities as well. Current park amenities include open play space, a covered shelter area, picnic tables, recreational courts, and playgrounds.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department's Feature Friday

Each Friday, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department features something new for residents or visitors to learn more about. This week we need your help in wishing our seasonal staff a farewell!

As another summer is coming to an end, we want to give a HUGE shout out to our seasonal employees! Over the course of the summer they have helped us with grounds and facility maintenance, mowing and trimming grass, painting, trash pickup, and SO much more! Their friendships, laughter, and hard work have made our jobs more enjoyable. We may be bias but, we think we had some of the best, most ambitious seasonal employees out there. Without their help, our summer would have been a lot less sunny!

Shelby is wrapping up her fourth and final summer with us here in the Parks and Rec Department. She is heading to her senior year at Northern Michigan University where she is majoring in general mathematics and minoring in computer science. After school, she plans to become a college math professor. During work she enjoys the people she works with, mowing and being outdoors and in her free time she enjoys playing tennis, hiking, fishing, and traveling. Shelby’s hard work and willingness to learn has made her an amazing asset to our team over the years. We wish her the best of luck but, we sure are going to miss her!

Marcus is finishing his second summer in Parks and Rec. He is considering careers in welding, landscaping and comedy. He enjoys many aspects of the job including driving the Tool Cat for Jason but, his favorite part of his job is bugging our full time staff, Jake and Shawn. When he’s not working, he enjoys browsing Facebook Marketplace. Marcus has brought fun to the department with sarcasm, jokes and his facial expressions all summer. His desire to learn new skills that he can carry into whatever is next for him has made him a pleasure to work with!

This was Jason’s first year with our Parks and Rec Department. He is heading to his sophomore year at UW Oshkosh where he is studying accounting and finance. After he graduates, he hopes to become an accountant. In his free time, he enjoys playing baseball, hunting, fishing, and showcasing his talents in amateur basket weaving. While working with us he has enjoyed his coworkers, mowing and being outside. Jason’s hard work and ability to fit into whatever job that we need has been a big help this summer. We couldn’t be happier that he decided to stick with us this year!

Ben is also wrapping up his first year with the Parks and Rec Department. He just graduated from UW La Crosse and hopes to find a career in Business Management. Throughout the summer he has enjoyed mowing grass, working outdoors, and the laid back crew and atmosphere. When he’s not at work, he enjoys fishing, golf and baseball. Ben’s willingness to help and learn new things has helped to make this another successful summer for our department. We are so glad he joined our team this year!
